Chapter 1:

He said (May God be well pleased with him)!:

Your desire for isolation,
even though God has put you in this world to gain a living,
is a hidden passion.
And your desire to gain a living in this world,
even though God has put you in isolation,
is a comedown from a lofty aspiration.

Commentary:
The word for isolation in Arabic is 'Tajrid' which carries with it the implication of withdrawing from society for contemplative aims, the one doing so is called muttajarrid, whereas the one one who carries on his contemplative life within society is the mutasabbib, that is to say he is also concerned with his livlihood (sabab) in the world.
